Popium 2007

Late July saw BBC Radio 2 choosing Popium’s timeless pop masterpiece ’Anchor Down’ as record of the week.

’Anchor Down’ is a late 60s early 70s classic pop tune which takes as its blueprint the hooks of The Beach Boys, the adroitness of The Byrds, the dreaminess of Supertramp, and blends it with a great production and sing-along from beginning to end. The track is taken from their debut UK album ‘The Miniature Mile’, which is scheduled for release in September.

Popium consists of Frank Hammersland on vocals/guitar, guitaris Martin Holmes, Christer Ottesen on bass, Frode Unneland on keys and drummer Yngve Sætre. Their two album releases in Norway have brought sales over 100 000, two Norwegian Grammy Nominations and songs on Hollywood films (including the adaptation of Nick Hornsby’s ‘Fever Pitch’). They are widely regarded as one of Norway’s most respected live bands, and Frank Hammersland (vocals) has just released his debut solo album, to yet another Grammy nomination.

In addition to the band’s radio success, UK Music industry tipsheet Record Of The Day made 'Anchor Down' their "Record Of The Day" in late July.

‘Anchor Down’ is out on 27 August.
