Motif: Motif

MIC's Listen To Norway series continues with Motif's self-titled album

Motif: Motif (cover)

Motif is yet another top-notch collective that has its origins at the prestigious Jazz course at the University of Trondheim. The challenging but also highly aesthetic tunes are held together masterfully by bassist Ole Morten Vågan who’s also penned most of the compositions. Other key players include Jaga Jazzist’s Mathias Eick on trumpet and Come Shine’s Håkon Mjåset Johansen on drums. Morif offer nods to the classic Miles Davis quintet of the mid 60s as well as a tribute to the best of contemporary Scandinavian chamber jazz. With rhythmic authority, Vågan pushes the whole ensemble forward through up-tempo and complex numbers as well as lyrical ballads. A very promising debut by a band-leader we’re destined to hear more from in the near future.
