Voted unanimously by the orchestra, Saraste will succeed Mariss Jansons and André Previn in this position. As Music Director, Saraste will conduct the Orchestra 10 weeks per year in Oslo, Norway. In addition, the orchestra is planning extensive touring and recordings with Saraste who is designated for a five-year period.

“I have respected the Oslo Philharmonic ever since I first conducted them back in the eighties, and I’m really enthusiastic to be able to develop our collaboration even further. We share the same artistic believes and I am very excited to make my contribution to the future growth of this orchestra” says Jukka-Pekka Saraste.

“Maestro Saraste has always been warmly welcomed in this orchestra, and we are delighted to see him as our new Music Director from August 2006. Together we will form a fascinating Nordic artistic unit, bringing new vitality to the orchestra’s leading position both in Norway as well as internationally”, says Morten Walderhaug, Chief Executive of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Saraste has been Music Director of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and is at present the Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, a position he will relinquish in August 2005.
