The Gramophone Magazine’s Artist of the Year 2004 award is given to one of six nominated artists that have enjoyed great success on record or on the concert stage over the past 12 months and are set to continue to impress music-lovers in the coming year.

The other nominees for the Gramophone Magazine’s Artist of the Year 2004 are
pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, countertenor David Daniels, mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink, conductor Paavo Järvi and mezzo-soprano Mgdalena Kozeną.

Details on the winner will be announced in the special Gramophone Awards issue that hit newsstands on October 1.

Says Gramophone editor James Jolly on Andsnes: “Few musicians develop and grow quite as rewardingly as this young Norwegian. Everytime he’s encountered in the concert hall or on disc, his powers of communication and his ability to get ever deeper under the skin of a piece of music have advanced not in mere steps but in huge strides. Last year he returned to the Grieg Piano Concerto in the company of the BPO and Mariss Jansons and it was as if the encounter was their first, such was the freshness and imagination of the performance.

This year we have heard him in Schubert sonatas, Dvorįk chamber music and, the coupling for that glorious Grieg favourite, the Schumann Piano Concerto.”
