3000 copies of the Norwegian Jazz Association’s jazzCD.no are these days being shipped to its various recipients abroad: festivals, clubs, agents and media. The promo-CD represents a cross section of some of Norway’s finest jazz, showcasing such diverse artists as Sidsel Endresen & Bugge Wesseltoft, Magni Wentzel, Tri-Dim Shining, Come Shine, Knut Riisnæs and more than 40 other excellent performers.

Says the project’s initiator, Norwegian Jazz Association’s Jan Granlie: Norwegian jazz maintains a position on the European jazz scene as a synonym of innovation and creative energy. We want to keep this position and maintain momentum. ECM recording artists Jan Garbarek and Terje Rypdal have contributed to the creation of a Norwegian jazz identity, and we can now harvest the fruits of their labour. Artists such as Bugge Wesseltoft, Sidsel Endresen, Nils Petter Molvær, Eivind Aarset, Silje Nergaard, Jaga Jazzist, Wibutee and others are frequently headlining leading international jazz festivals. October’s Fertiliser festival in London successfully showcased several of the new generation of performers, indicating that the international attention is increasing.

The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs supports the project, contributing with NOK 75 000 of a total budget of 250 000. Says Granlie of co-operation with the Ministry: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been very positive all the way since we first presented our ideas for the concept. Our focus now is to establish a good contact database that can prove valuable in the future. Initially, we will primarily concentrate on clubs and festivals as most of them are well on their way in planning next year’s programmes. For years, promoters all over Europe have showed interest in Norwegian jazz, but the availability of records has been limited by lack of distribution of releases. The Norwegian Jazz Association seeks to remedy this, and jazzCD.no is meant to fill those gaps and lead to more gigs for Norwegian jazz performers.
