Norway’s music export is increasing
The Norwegian music industry is facing better times as both national sales and export is now increasing.
According to figures from Norway’s performing rights society TONO, revenue generated by Norwegian artists abroad has almost tripled over the last five years. TONO issues licences for music users, collects fees from venues and producers and distributes the proceedings to the Norwegian recipients. Income generated abroad has since 1997 nearly tripled from NOK 6,1 million to 15,9 million in 2001. From 2000 to 2001 alone, Norwegian activity abroad amounted to an increase of 2,4 million.
Still the Norwegian turnover is a far cry from that of our eastern neighbours, Sweden. International revenue increased by 46% last year resulting in an income of SEK 617,2 mill. (NOK 500,2) for Sweden’s performing rights society, STIM.
Anyway, it’s a positive development for the Norwegian industry. Increased touring is one of the factors cited for the reason why the export is picking up. With artists such as Madrugada, Sondre Lerche, Cato Salsa Experience and not to forget Röyksopp being very active on the tour circuit, sales of Norwegian releases are expected to increase.
